PRINCE2 is a Framework, Not a Straitjacket: The Power of Tailoring

2026-06-18

A common misconception among those new to PRINCE2 is that it is a rigid, bureaucratic methodology that forces projects into a one-size-fits-all, document-heavy process. The PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner course reveals that the opposite is true. The most critical skill it imparts, especially at the Practitioner level, is the art of tailoring.

The Core Insight: Control without Constraint

PRINCE2 is designed to be adapted to the specific needs of any project, regardless of its scale, complexity, risk, or importance. The methodology provides a comprehensive set of principles, themes, and processes that act as a complete toolkit. A skilled practitioner doesn't use every tool for every job; they select and adapt the right ones.

Key Areas for Tailoring

The course teaches that tailoring is not about omitting parts of the framework, but about adapting their application. This includes:

  • Processes: For a small, internal project, the 'Starting up a Project' and 'Initiating a Project' processes might be combined into a single, streamlined phase.
  • Themes: The level of detail in Risk Management or Quality Management can be scaled. A high-risk project requires a formal Risk Register and detailed analysis, while a low-risk project might manage risks via a simple log.
  • Roles and Responsibilities: On a project with a small team, one person may fulfill multiple roles (e.g., the Project Manager may also be the Team Manager). The key is ensuring the responsibilities are still covered.
  • Management Products (Documents): The 26 management products defined in PRINCE2 are templates, not mandatory documents. The Business Case and the Benefits Management Approach might be combined into a single document for a simpler project. A Highlight Report could be an email instead of a formal document.

From Foundation Knowledge to Practitioner Skill

The journey from the Foundation to the Practitioner certification is a journey from "what" to "how."

  • Foundation Level: Focuses on understanding the components of the PRINCE2 methodology in their pure form. You learn all the tools in the toolbox.
  • Practitioner Level: Tests your ability to apply and tailor the methodology to a specific project scenario. You must demonstrate that you know which tools to use, and how to adapt them, to achieve a controlled and successful project outcome without creating unnecessary overhead.

Therefore, the true value of PRINCE2 certification lies not in memorizing the processes, but in mastering the judgment required to apply them proportionately. It provides a robust governance structure that can be scaled to provide just enough control for any given project.
